Enjoying Japanese TV that you don’t Understand — 6 Comments

  1. There is actually quite a bit you can pickup on even if you don’t understand everything that is said. Sometimes I don’t understand what is said as well as I would in English, but I do have a feeling of what is being said. Sometimes I’ll also hear words said repeatedly that I just studied which is really awesome.

I like to watch variety shows/game shows that are funny, have a lot of physical comedy or games, and just try to enjoy watching. I understand what I can and don’t stress about the rest.

  2. I had the same experience with 池袋ウェストゲート―パーク! it’s a really great show, although I still don’t understand a lot of it! One thing that I think can help with enjoying a show is reading a summary of the episode on wikipedia if you think you missed something important (in Japanese preferably, which gives you an opportunity for more immersion and learning new words), so that way you don’t miss the major plot points but don’t have to really mess up your immersion too much even if you read it in English.

  3. Lately I’ve been watching a lot of 相棒. It’s a great show, stands above the rest of the countless cop detective shows by a mile

  4. “The humor was obvious and laughable without requiring deep thinking”

Sorry to be a pedant, but I think “the humour was laughable” means the humour was bad, rather than amusing.

  5. I’m finding it to be superior to watch an easier anime and then re-watch it multiple times without subs.

The only issue is it does get very boring — rather, it is significantly less enjoyable — when you can’t understand everything.

And it sucks to watch a good, new anime without subs because you miss the story but are less inclined to watch it over again with subs; since you already saw it visually.

Guess it can’t all be fun.
