How To Know If A Japanese Girl Likes You
There are an endless number of ways to tell if a girl likes you. I’m sure. And most of this probably applies to Japanese girls as well. But there’s a unique way in Japan to tell how interested a girl may be. It all comes to down to a name. Depending on how close or distant a guy and girl are, the way the guy is called by the girl can reveal a lot about the way she feels about him.
Let’s make it clear by using Hiroshi Suzuki (the most common first and last names in Japan) as an example. And remember, since the pronoun “you” is rarely used in Japan, the below names are used in place of the word “you” in normal conversation.
It generally goes in the following order:
6. Suzuki-san
Distant – san attached to the person’s last name.
5. Hiroshi-san
Somewhat distant – san attached to the person’s first name.
4. Hiroshi-kun
Slightly distant – kun attached to a person’s first name.
3. Hiroshi
Somewhat close – using just the person’s first name.
2. Hiroshi-chan
Close – attaching chan to the person’s first name.
1. Hiro-chan, Hi-chan, Shi-chan
Very close – abbreviating the person’s first name in a cute way and adding chan.
A real bonus hint
Up until now this may seem pretty normal. Using name endings and politeness to show distance or closeness makes sense. But there is one additional factor to show that she may be interested in you.
If she goes from the pronoun I, わたし(Watashi) or the more casual あたし(Atashi), and starts using her own name in the third person, things are looking good.
Which looks like the following:
If a girl starts referring to herself in the third person, she may have romantic interest in you. And that’s Japanese romance in a nutshell!
Super Warning: all of the above may actually mean nothing, and it is just her trying to be friendly to you.
But, if you are lucky enough, this could be you:
Any other verbal cues you’ve seen where a Japanese girl shows that she likes a guy?

Hmm in the intro you said you would use the name Takeshi, but then you used Hiroshi? did I miss something? haha
While it’s true that what they call you may not always mean a whole lot in terms of romance, I think it’s useful in at least knowing how someone sees you, like, if we take Hiroshi-chan as example, even if it didnt actually mean she liked him in a romance way, it’d show him that she really does appreciate him and all. If that makes any sense
Typo! Not sure how I missed that.
And agreed. If it doesn’t mean romance, it shows level of friendship.
Ashame it is still hard to distinguish the boundary between getting to date the girl (Oh yea!ウキウキ) or slipping away into the “friendzone” (NOOOOOOOooooooo……..かなしい)
Yeah maybe Japanese needs a name ender that 100% let’s you know what is going on.
Where is this “friendzone” you speak of? I could use some friends.
It’s a place you end up without realizing how you ever got there.
Yesss, just the article I needed! Adshap, you’re the man.
(冗談w)
Agreed! My heterosexual interest in men is preventing me from absorbing this knowledge!
Haha. Except for the part about referring to one’s self in the third person, all of these apply to men showing interest (or friend levels) to women. So please absorb the knowledge.

It is also useful for foreign girls who want to show their interest in Japanese guys^^
Agreed! This is useful knowledge for both guys and girls.
I find that most Japanese girls are easy to get along with and very friendly. Even if you don’t try too hard, most of the time they treat you nice in return.
It may be hard to get a Japanese gf as they are quite reserved and shy but if you do things right, they would go for you.
I´m fucking lost with the Japanese girls’ reaction I don´t know what they want to do..if they are interested or not actually I tried with a some of them before, but now I’m fucking in love with a Nagoya girl but I don´t know
What can should I do to let know her about my feelings….any advice i would be very greatful
While I’m no expert on this subject, usually honesty works best along all cultures/languages. Tell her how you feel?
Thanks,it made me know…?
