Japanese Power Level Test – Round 2 — 11 Comments

    • These tests are meant to measure your level on a passing system, rather than determine your level based on the score of one or two rounds.

For every round you pass, it shows that you are over that level.

The 10 beginner tests will go all the way through the end of Beginner. If you can pass all of them you are over level 20. Individually each test would then be about 1.5 levels starting at about level 5 (to compensate for kana training and initial gathering of J-knowledge).

Pass round 1, and you are at least level 6.5, Pass round 2 and you are at least level 8.
Pass round 3, and you are at least level 9.5
And so on up to round 10 and level 20.

      Does this make sense?

      • Yes thank you, after I took the test and passed I thought wait what does this mean? But now it’s all cleared up.

  1. Thanks for creating the second round.
Again a reminder that my writing skill has room for improvement.

    • The writing section will be the most difficult on these tests. And while the early tests are “beginner” tests, they are meant to be challenging, as I think that makes them more fun.

If people are finding them too difficult, and aren’t getting a passing score when they know they should, I may lower the difficulty.

  2. I got 9 out of 10. I missed number 8 人と tripped me up lol. Also for number 3 for the writing could you also say 昨日彼は家に行きませんでした。

    • 9/10 is a great score. Nice job.

Yes, 昨日彼は家に行きませんでした。is fine. Technically it is moving the は from after 昨日, but it still shows full understanding so I’d count it as right.

  3. For 3, I thought of 彼が and 家へ.

Did well on speaking and reading. Tripped on writing due to the polite form. Did not expect ませんでした double-politeness and forgot that ありません is a polite version of ない. Messed up on listening, partially because I’m not used to を blending in so thoroughly.

Thank you for this excellent diagnostic tool.

  4. I scored 10. No perfect score streak for me :( But its more fun this way; I can’t wait for the next challenge!!!

    • Nice!

Technically 10 is a perfect score, as the kanji is just a bonus. Having kanji writing ability as part of the actual main score would cause too many problems, and wouldn’t be an accurate measure (even Japanese people have trouble writing out Kanji sometimes these days)
