Why People Like you More When your Japanese Sucks — 8 Comments

  1. Ah man this was exactly what I needed to hear. I’m definitely still in the spotlight phase, this really explains how I been feeling lately. You know what is funny is that Japanese people will actually say that you are are cute. I hear this all the time when speaking with people and I know they are not referring to my looks because of how they say it but I never quite got it, now I understand. It’s because my Japanese is so low level it’s like a I’m a child. Gives me a lot to think about, thanks Adam.

    • We all go through it, so it’s good to know to make sure you keep everything in a positive light. The real relationship phase is way more worthwhile, so you have something to look forward to.

  2. This gives me hope! I think I’ll be cute and exotic for the rest of my life. I also feel good giving a Japanese person an ego boost. Thanks for this funny perspective, Adam.

  3. Insanely accurate, thanks for writing exactly what I needed to hear. I frequent a English/Japanese Language meetup here in Okinawa and I can relate to the spotlight phase you mentioned. I was feeling kind of shit throughout the post till you brought it back to what matters most, developing real and meaningful relationships.
    ありがとう!

  4. I’ve tried to explain this exact same thing to a few people over the years when I am told I must be popular since I can speak Japanese. I’ll point them to this post next time it comes up.
