Reading Kanji Now Proven to Damage your Eyesight — 16 Comments

  1. Reading Kanji is like reading the Elder Scrolls. With each reading, you become more enlightened, but your vision slowly deteriorates.

That’s why we need to use Kanji-Braille to save our eyes. JALUP should produce a paper version of decks that uses Bralle.

  2. Heh, nice April Fools’ joke.

And even if it was true, it’d be worth it. And that’s why we have glasses and all. :)

  3. It’s a good thing that glasses are cool. Yeah, I have noticed my eyes getting worse ever since I started studying Japanese. At least we have the kana unlike Chinese.

  4. *(written before I read the comments section…) The whole thing is bull if you read using a computer because you can just increase the font size. When reading a novel, pull out the magnifying glass, or wear reading glasses that dramatically magnify the kanji.

  5. Maybe reading Kanji is slowly killing my eyesight, but reading kana and romaji only definitely fries my brain cells. I’d choose blindness over brain deadness any day.

And when I’m finally blind, I’ll finally get to all that listening immersion I keep telling myself that I’ll do someday.

  6. For those interested in a few easter eggs:

    1. University of Sagi (詐欺) = University of deception/fraud
    2. Tomizawa Takeshi is a famous comedian from the group Sandwich Man who often looks like he is squinting.

However, while eye strain won’t damage your eyes, it can decrease your concentration, and taking frequent “eye-stretch” breaks can help dramatically. One of the first posts on Jalup from early 2011 talked about just this (http://japaneselevelup.com/less-eye-strain-better-japanese/)

  7. You get me every year. I though my life was over when you posted that one last year about all the kanji changing.

  8. Haha, excellently done! I wound up reading this far enough from 4/1 that it didn’t even occur to me that it might be a gag. I was starting to freak out a little bit, admittedly :P
