Why Studying with an SRS App is Overpowered #1: Zero-Barriers — 3 Comments

  1. This is consistent with my experience. Being quite busy with work and family having the JALUP app and a clear path to really just get to the studying bit has finally released the log-jam which was usually: “Where do I even start?”. I was wondering though if anyone out there has become fluent, or let’s say: “has made significant progress” in their Japanese using the slow but steady route. I’m talking about people with families and jobs or other commitments who just plugged away 5-10 cards day, 1 hour or so of active studying, supplementing when you can – and then one day X years later they realized they were fluent!(?) :) I found this article https://japaneselevelup.com/are-you-setting-a-dangerous-daily-flash-card-goal/ helpful – and I wondered if anyone has actually done it without the massive 50+/day surges that a lot of people seem to go through at one point or another.

    • First, studying an hour or so actively every day is a lot, and is not to be underestimated.

I’ve seen plenty of people who have taken the long route to fluency, taking their time over 5-10 years, and doing just fine. So it’s not just about speed and 50+ new cards a day. If anything, these are the exceptions that you just see more because they stand out.

I know there are some lurkers out there who have stories to share about their long term, slow and steady path :)

  2. Good to know! I hope to be one of those success stories one day. Going on 20 years now..been working actively on improving though since January.
