Achieving Your Japanese Goals – June 2020 — 14 Comments

  1. This month I will continue trying to get reviews down so I can up my production and immersion time. I am going to start on my new Intermediate Shadowing book. The first felt super effective for me so I am excited to try this. That said I am expecting to hit a ton of new vocab and for the conversations to be harder and harder, so I am okay with taking it slow so I don’t add too many new words to my deck too quickly.

My goals this month in no particular order:

    1) Keep up with Reviews

    2) Do 30 minutes (up from 15) of shadowing a day from my Intermediate Shadowing book. Try to complete 1 unit (2 units if it is easier than I expect but no pressure here, the important thing is the time not the speed. This will have be finish at the end of September or end of January depending on my speed per month.

    3) Add all new words from my shadowing book to my personal post-jalup deck

    4) 23 new Terrace house episodes from the original series, this will finish the original series for me (98 eps total)

    5) Hello Talk daily, at least 1 personal chat and 1 moment post each day.

    • This month felt great, I am really hitting a groove with my life post-jalup. I am going to adjust methods for next month a bit to start increasing and shifting the type of listening I am doing. In detail this month:

      1) Keep up with Reviews

      DONE

      2) Do 30 minutes (up from 15) of shadowing a day from my Intermediate Shadowing book. Try to complete 1 unit (2 units if it is easier than I expect but no pressure here, the important thing is the time not the speed. This will have be finish at the end of September or end of January depending on my speed per month.

DONE – Completed unit 1. That was plenty difficult. I did a solid 30 min+ everyday. I also realized every unit is divided into an easy and harder section. So from now on I will skip around and do the easy of all units first then go back to do the second sections.

      3) Add all new words from my shadowing book to my personal post-jalup deck

DONE, also have been adding words from the wild and Hello Talk. Happy with a little slower adding pace this month to keep reviews down, but plenty of new ones still.

      4) 23 new Terrace house episodes from the original series, this will finish the original series for me (98 eps total)

Done – All finished with the originals now. Going to decrease these next month and shift more to podcasts for a bit.

      5) Hello Talk daily, at least 1 personal chat and 1 moment post each day.

DONE – This has become more and more helpful. I am building way more confidence in expressing myself. I usually have 2-5 active conversations everyday plus my moments/diary post daily.

  2. Same goals as last month

    1) Keep going with Jalup Hero, no more than 15 cards. If I did 15/day everyday I could finish it, but I do like the pace of 10/day currently. I am seriously considering dropping even below 10 in the future to make more room for selfmade cards and immersion, but that will be after Hero the earliest.

    2) Add at least 4, expect 6, want 8+ selfmade branches from interesting cards from immersion. However, I will not force myself to make cards just to “technically” fulfill the goal.

I am also considering looking into the big “speaking/writing” Japanese thing which I completely ignored so far. But nothing concrete enough yet to make an explicit goal out of it, however I feel I need a new challenge to get motivation up a bit again

    • Oh wow, its already the last day of June. Time flies :)

      1) Ye easy sailing. No risk of overdoing it, I actually dropped to 5/day for the last couple of days because the additions from self-made cards increased by quite a bit but more on that below

      2) This kind of exploded. I did 47 words+necessary branches (which rarely added more than 2 extra cards). Main reason is because the book for my new challenge arrived earlier than expected (was intending to start in July). I decided to expand into a field of science/math because if I ever want to be able to talk about my profession I need those words :-) As a start I bought 数学ガール as a high-school novel about basic (well, depends on the perspective) math sounded like the perfect start. Goal is to basically add all unknown words which do not require deep branching. So far I am having a blast, reading has become so much easier :)
Already understanding the math *really* helps at understanding the words which makes creating cards (and having them stick) quite easy for me. Also, now I know totally useful words like 素因数分解 which I am sure of will help tremendously in my journey (kidding of course :) ).

So if you cannot tell, I am quite happy with this month :)

        • Haha thanks for the link! It looks interesting indeed :)

Looks like it also includes some 物理学, which is what I actually studied and what I am planning to expand when the basic math works!

And don’t worry about the immersion. Just watch it if you find it interesting enough and it will improve overtime!

  3. Pretty straightforward

    1. Keep reading kuma kuma kuma bear 10 chapters a day adding 100 words until monday

    2. 2nd week – subs2srs senko san to 99-100% in anki

    3. 3rd week – subs2srs quintessential quintuplets to 99-100% (or maybe something else idk)

    4. Take a week off for reviews and other things in life

    5. On the 29th start subs2srs we never learn season 1

    6. Listen to atleast 1 hour of podcast everyday

    7. Start listening to subs2srs content as pure audio about 2 weeks in

    • I mostly did this, I changed a few things around but here is it.

1.I read kuma kuma kuma bear through chapter 200, good “easy” for most novel read. I definitely recommend.

      2. I didn’t get to 99% as there wasn’t enough time

      3. Same as 2 but closer

      4. I took the weekend off of this week as i was a bit behind but it worked out (still did reviews ofc)

      5. I started シンドバッドの冒険

      6. I didn’t do that many podcast, but i did listen to what i was studying for atleast an hour and i have been trying to work my way up to 4 hours a day plus as i have a greater backlog of sub2srs’d content.

      7. I talked about it in 6

Pretty good month, but July really needs to be a good month since I take the BJT in august and need to pass it.

    • Yes, finished it and finally finished the 5,000 cards! It has been a long time coming. I first started Adam’s decks about 5 years ago, made it through part of expert and then decided to restart the decks 2.5 years with stricter criteria for passing a card after discussing my strategy with Adam in one of his personal advisor sessions.

My current deck has 5857 cards. 5000 of them Adam’s cards, perhaps another 100-200 from Adam’s immersion cards that I added earlier. The rest of the 600 are self made cards from tutoring sessions. I gave up the kanji deck last month (kept it as a separate deck) I haven’t had the good results yet that others have posted about after finishing the deck but hopefully this will come in time with more immersion.

My deck says that I have studied 875 out of 899 days for a total time of 1040 hours.

I’m going to stop posting on the monthly goals since I’ve made it through the decks and just work on immersion (plus daily reviews) and give the method more time to work.

  4. Your specific goal(s):
Finish Beginner Situations and Beginner Stories
    First 150 cards of Intermediate
    Genuinely enjoy Japanese more

    Resources you will use:
    JALUP Anki cards
    Netflix, YouTube, MP3s
    Android app

    Game plan/strategy:
    Study every morning (Anki)
Look for moments to fill with Japanese; I sent my phone to beep every hour to remind me.
Stop tracking my Japanese time; it’s turning Japanese into a chore rather than something fun.

    • I finished:
128 cards of JALUP Intermediate out of my goal of 150.
      73% of Beginner Situations
      1/5 Beginner Stories.

Not as much as I wanted to, but I still feel like progress was made.

  5. Same goals as in the past month

-End Jalup Expert (currently finishing stage 2)

-End SAO (first season) (animelon.com is back online, during May it was out)

-Watch and finish one more anime besides SAO and understanding an overall of 80%

I’ll see you all by the end of June. Sorry for my late post, I just happened to be busy as hell.

    • Goals June 2020

      – I ended the first season of SAO with j-subs but I wasn’t able to finish any other anime beside that I kept with the new releases instead but they didn’t had j-subs

      – Today I finished Jalup Expert and by tomorrow I will be starting Jalup Hero hoping to finish it within July

      – Didn’t do much immersion besides listening to music on my way to work primarily because of lack of time.

It was an OK month with little upgrades but worthwhile because I can now understand more than before.
